The history of hyperbaric medicine is more than a chronology of inventions, discoveries, and technological achievements. It is the story of humanity’s enduring quest to understand one of nature’s most fundamental elements—air—and its profound influence on life, health, and disease. For millennia, air was regarded as an invisible and mysterious substance, essential for life yet poorly understood. Ancient philosophers described it as a vital essence, physicians recognized its necessity for respiration, and natural philosophers sought to explain its behavior through observation and reason. Only through centuries of scientific inquiry did these abstract concepts evolve into measurable physical laws and reproducible physiological principles.

The development of hyperbaric medicine exemplifies the convergence of diverse scientific disciplines. This continual refinement has transformed hyperbaric oxygen therapy from an intriguing scientific curiosity into an established medical specialty supported by advances in physiology, molecular biology, biomedical engineering, and clinical research.

Today, hyperbaric medicine occupies a unique position at the intersection of medicine, engineering, and environmental science. Modern hyperbaric facilities incorporate technologies that would have been unimaginable to the earliest investigators, yet they remain grounded in the same fundamental physical principles first explored during the Scientific Revolution. The gas laws described by seventeenth-century natural philosophers continue to govern every treatment administered within a contemporary hyperbaric chamber, while ongoing research continues to reveal new cellular and molecular mechanisms by which oxygen and pressure influence human biology.
